A Brief History of The Green

The Norwalk Green was originally used by townspeople as a grazing common for cattle and sheep, from the 1600’s through the early 1800’s. This historic town Green became a publicly held town park within the Borough of Norwalk when it incorporated in 1836. The Borough of Norwalk became the First Taxing District in 1913 when several separate towns and cities consolidated to become the City of Norwalk. Today the green is still owned, maintained, and operated by the First Taxing District of the City of Norwalk, Connecticut.
